What kind of procedures does Allergy and Asthma Clinic of Maryland perform?

The medical team performs different procedures based on the symptoms the patient has. Some of the procedures are:

Skin Prick Testing — This type of testing is the most standard and is nearly painless. A minuscule amount of different allergens is put into your skin by forming a small indentation or “prick” on top of your skin. If you are allergic to any of these allergens, there will be a little swelling that looks and feels similar to a mosquito bite. If you aren’t allergic to certain allergies that have been tested, your skin will not have a reaction. This is a quick test as reactions usually occur within 20 minutes.

Intradermal Skin Testing — This test injects a small amount of each thing you may be allergic to (allergen) under the skin. You will get a bump and redness if you are allergic to the injected allergen.

Patch Testing — This is a test where the allergens are added to a patch which is then placed on your back or arm (contact dermatitis). The patch remains on your skin for 48 hours. This can determine delayed allergic reactions.

Pulmonary Function Test — This test is also called a spirometry test. This test measures how much air you can inhale and exhale. This tool helps diagnose asthma.
Oral Food Challenges — This is a feeding test which is a medical procedure to meticulously analyze a true food allergy.

Food Allergy Desensitization (Oral Immunotherapy) — Oral immunotherapy (OIT) is a developmental treatment in which patients who have food allergies consume gradually increasing quantities of the food causing allergies to improve their allergic reaction threshold.

Drug Allergy Testing — When a patient has an allergic reaction from medication, commonly known as an adverse reaction to medication, the allergist will perform a drug challenge.

Allergy and Asthma Clinic of Maryland in Silver Spring, MD

Dr. Kalfa provided great information and support to me during my appointment. He took his time and went out of his way to perform a full food allergy test on my arms instead of my back (due to a large tattoo). Dr. Kalfa also went out of his way to answer my questions about how to change my diet…
